living with gardenias

Do you ever do things at times that you think everyone in the world knows about, so you don't share? I think that about myself a lot, but just in case there's one person out there who doesn't know this or that one thing, I'm going to make an effort to share more ideas. Because sometimes, we may have similar ideas, but execute them differently, right? That's my thinking behind today's post, anyway...

My lovely neighbors recently gifted us with a gardenia plant. How I love these flowers, especially that heavenly scent! When they bloom, I usually clip them and place them in a shallow bowl of water, where they don't need to do anything more than float and smell wonderful.

I clip them short; they tend to droop over if I leave the stems long, so putting them in a vertical vase doesn't really work for me. Instead, I cut them under the bulb, but not too close because I want all of the petals to stay together and not fall away.

Then I fill a shallow bowl with cool water and add the blooms. Easy, simple beauty in a matter of minutes.

Did I mention that delicious smell?

That is such a beautiful, modern twist on a potpourri bowl - even saying that phrase makes me feel like an old lady, but I would gladly have a bowl like that in my apartment :)

Such a pretty display and cool cutting technique... now I want a gardenia bush and believe early summer is the best time to do it and hopefully will have something for next year. Thanks for sharing.

How beautiful! I had no idea that you could do this. Would this work for other flowers too? My mom gives me roses and peonies from her garden and I just usually put them in a vase. It is always sad when they start to loose their petals.

so pretty! and yes, that smell is amazing. that and jasmine - they both speak to me of summer heat in the french quarter, hidden courtyards.

I've never smelt a fresh, live gardenia; so it's an interesting reminder of what others find familiar!

That would be pretty, too, if the inside of the bowl was glazed in a blue or green.

That really is a great idea. I have a few gardenias and always mean to cut them but never knew how to "display" them. I am so totally copying! How long do they last once cut?
