January Ornament

ornamentornamentornamentornament

I know, I know. Christmas just ended, so why am I crocheting an ornament?

One of my goals is to have a Christmas tree decorated with all handmade ornaments. Knowing my track record, I figure I better get started now if I'm going to be ready come December. (Since I'll probably only make one ornament per month and hopefully end up with twelve, I'm looking at a mini-tree for a handmade one this year.) Even I can tackle one ornament per month, right? That's my aim, so this is January's entry. I think I'll tie in each month's ornament to some kind of theme, maybe related to a holiday that month. Or maybe I'll just wing it. Since it's January, I thought a soft blue and white fit this month well.

Anyway, this was nothing more than a simple double-crochet (UK: treble-crochet) circle.
  1. Chain 5, join with a slip stitch and form a ring.
  2. Ch 3, 11 dc into ring, join with sl st to close.
  3. Ch 3, 1 dc into same spot, then 2 dc into every st of previous round, join with sl st to close.
  4. Ch 3, 1 dc into same spot, *[1 dc into next st, 2 dc into next st]; repeat from * to last, 1 dc, join with sl st to close.
Fasten off. Make two circles (same color or different). Affix button to center of each circle. With wrong sides facing, join circles with sl st, leaving a small opening to stuff with filling of your choice (I used Poly-fil). After stuffed, continue to sl st until closed. Ch 12 and join end of chain to beginning with a sl st. Fasten off.

Admire your handiwork!

Taking part in Creative Friday at Natural Suburbia -- happy weekend, all.

I love the simplicity of the blue and white together, it looks very classy :)

Good idea to get started now so that you have the ornaments you need by Christmas this year (hopefully posting about it means you won't forget, which is what I would do, and still end up in a rush in November!)

That's a lovely ornament. I made quite a few in felt last year because I had planned it.
It's such a good idea to get started now so you have time to finish them

I have the same dream, and you have reminded me that I need to get onto this - I would like 24 ornaments for thismChristmas, so I can out one into each day of the advent calendar. So TWO per month, heh! Must not forget!

This one is really pretty, I love the buttons. buttons make everything better!

Beautiful ornament. Hey you can still talk about Christmas! I will be making Christmas things all during the year. I think that's the only way to get stuff done on time and enjoy the season. I love this idea of one a month and having handmade ornaments on the tree.

Cute! I always want to knit ornaments AFTER Christmas... it's weird. But I only get one in each year. So. It's a small tree. I noticed there is a ravelry group, though, (maybe even a couple) for 12 ornaments in 2012... they had some nice ideas if you end up needing one!

It's a great idea to begin your ornaments now. You're just like me, If I left them then they'd never get done. In fact, I just remembered I have an ornament kit from THREE years ago I never finished! oops! Maybe I'll join you and take it out & do one a month.

That is really, really cute but I am very worried by the (impressive) extent of your forward planning!

I am doing the same thing. You know how you always end the holidays making these vows about next year? Well, I'm sort of doing them. Fixing what needs fixed. Making maps of where to put things. And starting my next year's army of ornaments. If you go to my blog and search for Christmas party or ornaments, you'll find the ornament party we've been having for thirty years - all kinds of wild things. And I end up - whatever ornament brain-child I come up with during the year - making at least eleven of them for friends and fam. And I HATE doing them at the last minute. So hat's off to you for getting your start. ornaments are great because they are refreshing, tiny, easily finished and great fun. As opposed to sweaters that take months and then don't fit. YAY!

This is so simple and so sweet. I love your goal for next Christmas too. I can only imagine how beautiful your tree will be if all your decorations are as gorgeous as this one. Delighted to have found your blog (through Natural Suburbia) x

Ha! I love it! A crocheted ornament! I also love the idea of making one per month. Just so you know, there are a few groups on Ravelry, with pattern suggestions, ornament topics,etc.... Should be fun. Thanks for the pattern, by the way, it's super cute:0)

I love your ornament a month idea! So much less stressful than waiting until November or December when all that gift knitting is due, too. Wonderful pattern and I will definitely be bookmarking this one to try my new crochet skillz on. Love the winter color combination and coordinating buttons!
