Breathe

On the very last day of 2011, this came in the mail…

yarn

It was part of my second place prize from the contest I entered last fall at the lovely Stitched in Color. The other prizes I won came some time ago, and this sweet fiber yarn arrived with a note of apology for the delay, but no apologies were necessary. Getting yarn on the last day of a not-so-stellar year was a great way to close it out.

The other prizes I won were this Everything Old yarn…

yarn,

…a pattern of my choosing and the Try It interchangeable needle set from Knit Picks.

needles

I tried out the needles right away on the sweater I'm working on for #1 Girl -- the sweater that was supposed to be wrapped in time for Christmas, remember? I was knitting with the acrylic tips and they were awesome…until I noticed that the circular join had unscrewed itself so that my stitches were no longer securely on the joining wire, but were hanging in thin air.

Do I even need to continue? Can you see where this tragedy is going?

I screwed the needle back into place, but you know when you're knitting away, you're not exactly paying attention to what your needles are doing, especially when you kind of expect them to take care of themselves. Anyway, the join unscrewed again and I ended up dropping a bunch of stitches before realizing it.

Sometimes you just get discouraged when things like this happen, you know? The sweater did not make it under the tree in time. I went back to using my trusty fixed circular needles and put the interchangeables away…well away. I don't even want to look at them right now, lovely as they are. Right now, however, I need to work on  a project with no bad memories currently attached. I'll get back to the sweater, and soon, but for now, I've returned to a project that's nearly done. That's really what I need right about now.
Pin It Now!

URGH! That's horrible about your needles :( It would take me a while to get over it, too!

That drives me crazy. One of the ways I've fixed the unscrewing needles problem is to use one of those round, rubber jar lid grippers to grip the needle while I'm turning it with the key so that i can get it as tight as possible. When I called Knit Picks to complain about the problem, they suggested that I use one. Here's an example of what they look like.

LOL, gasping and choking. That happened to me when I had something like 240 stitches! Don't mean to laugh, really. But I feel your pain. Drooling over yarn haul!!! soooo pretty!

Can you return those needles? That's a real pain in the arse to have to deal w/that all the time.
Great yarn scores you got! Love the second one.

I am sitting here just drooling over your yarn, it is beautiful!
I know you will make something wonderful with it.

I have never used interchangable tips, but was just thinking of
ordering some, now maybe not. I have been using bamboo needles,
but really want something with a sharper tip while working on a sweater.

Oh noes! How annoying. I love my interchangeable sticks, but you really do have to screw them in tight.

But the yarn - wow! So lush and lovely. Hope that helps make up for the disappointment with the needles.

Gorgeous yarn! I especially love the sweet fiber yarn. My first pair of interchangeable needles were from knitpicks. I loved them until the join on one broke and I had to spend hours trying to recover my stitches (lace yarn, lace project). They were promptly donated. Now I use Addi Clicks. The joins are much sturdier and do not require a key to tighten.

oh dear how terrible!

I use knit-pick needles but mine come with this little pin thing that helps to REALLY tighten them so that they don't get unscrewed. I love mine. Never tried the acrylic ones though.

That yarn is beautiful. The red one.... mmmmm yummm

Beautiful yarn but that's rubbish about the needles - I wouldn't be at all impressed! Hopefully the project will be able to put its past behind it soon ;)

Those pics are definitely yarn p*rn... making my hands yearn to knit or crochet something. Disconnecting of the needle join is a real PITA which has happened to me a few times with Knit Picks option needles. I ended up using crazy glue to rejoin.

Ugh self-unscrewing needles, what knitter needs that? My friend had some susan bates circs break on her while she was knitting a shawl. I think I would have had a fit. Good for you for putting things away when they need to be. I hope this year is much better for you than the last!

I know what you mean when you say about a project with no bad memories currently attached! I did something I suppose was stupid: I took an old, old McCall's magazine and picked a project that was very cool looking, (very retro!) for my oldest. The pattern was written with a pretty devastating error in it, (a pullover with a 16 inch neck?!?!?) and I had to rip out and re-knit the neckline. I still can't look at it. I guess quality control wasn't something they worried about in 1967...
