Little Things

I had one of those weekends that was pretty surreal. On Saturday, I was in the right place at the right time (helped store security catch a shoplifter by paying attention to a car's license plate) & on Sunday, I was either in the right place at the wrong time or in the wrong place at the right time. Not sure which. This was the day I saw my neighbor's dog get hit by a car. As you can imagine, it was pretty horrible. I only think I was in the right place because I was able to get the dog out of the street before she was hit again (this is the most traveled street in our city; had she been hit twice, she would've died on the spot). As it is, Pebbles didn't make it. The vet said he could have saved her, but she would've had a lifetime of problems.

So naturally, I had to come home & hug my little dog, hardheaded little beast that she is.

Is that a mud puddle?

And appreciate little things, like my first fledgling tomato of the season...

If the landscaping were left up to me, I'd plant only things I can take care of, so our yard would be full of cactus and rocks. Luckily, it's not left up to me.

Knitting will be back next time...'til then, hug someone you love, pass along a kind word & please stop for a minute to appreciate the little things we take for granted every single day.

Where I've Been...

The past couple of weeks have been busy, but what else is new? I haven't knitted everything I wanted, but I have been knitting. I had to take on some stress-free projects because I have two weddings to attend next month: I really want to go to one, while I keep hoping a minor tidalwave or other non-serious catastrophe happens to prevent my having to go to the other one.

When I became afflicted with the Startitis disease, I wondered why we never hear of knitters getting Finishitis. Or if they do, no one complains about it. You never hear a knitter say "Oh my gosh, I can't stop myself from casting off!" or "I have so many projects and yet, I'm finishing another one! Help!"

Looking at my WIPs, I know I can realistically finish a couple of them within a week. Do you think that's motivation enough or do I keep reaching for new yarn? In my defense, I would like to point out that in keeping with my Stash Down 2008 goal, I made one new purchase since the year started & that was for a gift that I didn't already have yarn for.

This weekend, I'm going to work on some WIPs, continue to trudge through Atlas Shrugged (it's very hard to read a book when you don't like a single character, but you know me, I just can't quit) & just relax, for a change.

Sideways Cardi Diary, to date

Day 1: Find yarn & needles. Swatch with several needle sizes & see that getting gauge on all 4 measurements with one needle size is impossible. Settle on size 6's & stay up knitting until 1 a.m.

Day 2: Work on lower back for most of the afternoon, wondering if size 6's are indeed the right size.

Day 3: Don't get much knitting done. Grumble.

Day 4: Take measurements for the thousandth time & realize that the only way the cardi is going to fit in any flattering way is if I pack on 10-15 pounds. Head to the kitchen to put this plan into action before Good Sense intervenes & reminds me that if I pack on weight just to fit into this cardi, I won't be able to fit into anything else. Go back to cardi & frog, trying not to cry.

Days 5-6: With size 4 needles in hand, restart cardi.

Day 7: Get to lace portion & realize instructions are written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics get a little confused by one part of instructions. Insert lifeline because the thought of any more frogging may cause me to become violent.

Day 8: FINISH THE BACK!!!

So it only took me one day longer than the Creation of the World to knit the back of this cardi. I feel like a...a...knitting goddess. :-)
